I dont want to reveal a ton about this, and instead to take you through the events of how it all started. So without further delay. Lets get into... Oldroot


Part I: The begining

The mystery begins on July 11th 2014. Reddit User Lewis Green posted an image that they had recived from a mysterious reddit account by the name of oldroot. He later would post this to the subreddit r/minecraft asking what people thought it was. He mentioned that oldroot gave him a message with the image

"Those who are pure will see what hides in darkness"

This was that post

It contained the following image which would be posted to imgur. At first glimpse it is darkness and nothing more, but looking back to oldroots message it becomes clear we need to indeed find what hides in darkness. Upon brighting the image we see a disturbing scene with a faceless figure.


We can see a link is exposed. Upon zooming in it reads

"https://soundcloud.com/oldroot/it-has-begun"

Now back to the soundcloud. When putting it through a spectogram we get an imgur link and the phrase Silentraven. This was the brightned image of what was found

we find that another image was send to lewis green which he follows up in the comments with "I wont be sleeping tonight"

When this image was brightned we get this

We get three bits of information

  1. ZH DUH ZDLWLQJ which when decrypted with a caesar cipher shift of 3 gets WE ARE WAITING


  2. fm3Yw0b another imgur link which we will investigate


  3. morse code which spells out oldroot


When following the imgur link we get another dark image. Lets brighten it. We see it says... RAVEN. In between the letters is the excerpt from a famous poem called the raven by edgar allan poe. The mispelled words combind read the hidden truth is... What? Is it raven. Or something else. Seems to be a dead end. So this tangent brought no final answer, howeber it did provide some clues. For the second time morse code spells oldroot

But wait! Something peculir was found

Two whitelist applications for minecraft servers were found. They both had a poem made by oldroot... This may fill in the blank above

That last part reads trapped in a prison of wood

It seems whatever paranormal or other wordly being oldroot is is responsable for trapping beople inside a deep old tree in the roots that tangent off creating mysteries... Interesting stuff. The most interesting part is the mention of a myserty and a sacrifine in patterns of three. What could that mean? Is this myserty tangented into patterns of three. Is this how we get to the conclusion. It could mean that the puzzle has patterns of three within it and would explain why so many things had to be decrypted using rot3



We see a pattern. The raven, particularly edgar allen poes famous work is mentioned a lot. The raven symbolises death and bad omen, in fact that is a lot of what happens in the poem.
